Free printable flashcard maker

Paste your terms and definitions, pick a card size and download a PDF with cut lines. Print it double-sided, or choose fold-over cards if your printer only prints on one side.

One card per line: front, then a tab, a dash, a semicolon or a vertical bar, then back. You can paste two columns straight from a spreadsheet.

Free, no sign-up. Made in your browser, your cards are not uploaded.

How to make flashcards that actually help you remember

Flashcards work because they make you pull the answer out of your memory instead of rereading it. That effort is what makes facts stick. A few habits make a big difference:

  • One idea per card. “Mitosis” on the front and one clear definition on the back. Split long answers into several cards.
  • Write questions, not just terms. “What does the mitochondria do?” makes you think harder than “Mitochondria”.
  • Say the answer before you flip. Out loud or in your head. If you only think “I kind of know this”, count it as wrong.
  • Shuffle the deck. If the order never changes, you start remembering the order instead of the answers.
  • Make the cards yourself. Choosing what goes on each card is already part of learning it.

Use the Leitner box method

A simple system from the 1970s that tells you which cards to review and when. All you need is three boxes or three envelopes.

  • Box 1: every new card starts here. Review it every day.
  • Box 2: cards you answered correctly move here. Review every two or three days.
  • Box 3: cards you got right again. Review once a week.

Whenever you miss a card, it goes back to Box 1. You end up spending most of your time on the cards you don’t know yet, which is exactly where it pays off.

How to print double-sided flashcards

  • Choose Double-sided, download the PDF and print it with “Print on both sides” and “Flip on long edge”.
  • The backs are mirrored on purpose, so each answer lands right behind its question.
  • Not sure about your printer? Print the first two pages, hold the sheet up to the light and check before printing the rest.
  • No double-sided printer? Choose One-sided, fold: the question and answer sit side by side, you fold each card in half.
  • Heavier paper or cardstock (65–110 lb, about 175–300 gsm) feels like real index cards and you can’t see the answer through it.

Questions

How do I print flashcards on both sides?

Download the double-sided PDF and print it with “Print on both sides” and “Flip on long edge”. The answers are mirrored so they line up behind the questions.

Can I paste a list from a spreadsheet or another flashcard app?

Yes. Copy two columns (front and back) from Google Sheets or Excel and paste them, they come in separated by tabs. Any list with a tab, dash, semicolon or vertical bar between front and back works too.

What size are index cards?

The most common index card in the US is 3 × 5 inches, and 4 × 6 inches is the larger option. Choose “Index · 6/page” for cards close to 3 × 5.

How many cards can I make at once?

Up to 300 cards per PDF. For bigger decks, split them into several files.

Are paper flashcards better than flashcard apps?

Both work if you test yourself and review on a schedule. Paper cards are distraction-free and easy to shuffle; apps remind you when to review. Many students use both.
